I’d rate Behind the Shadows "8/10". What I liked most about the film is how much attention it gives to the characters, their emotions, and the problems they are dealing with. Both the private investigator and the police detective are broken in their own ways, and their personal situations add an emotional layer to the murder investigation.
One thing that disappointed me is that the killer is revealed too early. For viewers expecting the identity to remain a mystery until the end, this may take away some of the suspense. Still, the performances and emotional side of the story kept me interested from beginning to end.
Louis Koo feels very natural in the role, which is something I have always liked about his acting. I first watched him in Rob-B-Hood with Jackie Chan, and since then I have watched some of his other films. I also really enjoyed Twilight of the Warriors: Walled In. Here, his serious and natural performance works especially well.
I hadn't watched Chrissie Chau in any of her other films before this, but she looks good and gives a beautiful performance as the investigator's wife. Liu Kuan-ting is also good, particularly in his emotional scenes.
The movie is fast-paced but still feels balanced. The relationship between the private investigator and his wife adds emotional weight, while the police detective has his own difficult situation involving his wife, who is in a coma.

After the detective's identity as the killer becomes clear, the story turns into a cat-and-mouse game between him and the private investigator. The connection between the murdered women's also becomes clearer: they were women's who had affairs with other men's. The detective's actions are closely connected to his own wife's betrayal, which completely breaks him emotionally.
The private investigator eventually realizes that he has made a big mistake by allowing his personal life to become mixed with his professional investigation. After learning that his client's fiancée has been killed, he takes a photograph of the suspicious car number plate and goes to the police station.
When he meets the detective and hands over the photograph, one of the detective's colleagues points out that the car's number plate is fake. But the private investigator notices something else. The detective wipes his sweat with a handkerchief in exactly the same way he had seen the killer do earlier. That small detail makes him realize that the detective is connected to the murders.
The Final Confrontation
Near the end, the detective kidnaps Betty, the girlfriend of the private investigator's friend. Betty is unconscious when he takes her to a new house and places her on the bed beside him. The house is newly furnished, so the furniture is still covered in plastic. The detective also wraps Betty in plastic while she is unconscious so she cannot move if she wakes up.
He locks the room and places burning charcoal inside, creating smoke. His plan is to die there with Betty while imagining her as his wife.
The private investigator follows the trail and eventually reaches the house. He finds Betty and the detective unconscious in the locked room. He manages to get Betty out, but the detective wakes up and attacks him with a knife.
Their fight eventually moves into the swimming pool. Both men are badly injured, and after the struggle they are both drowning in the water.
Then the detective regains consciousness. Memories of his wife come back to him, and he appears to see her in his mind. In that moment, he pulls the private investigator out of the water instead of allowing him to drown.
The detective then goes toward Betty, still thinking about his wife. His wife appears to apologize to him, although this is part of his hallucination. The detective tells the private investigator to take Betty away.
The private investigator manages to get Betty out, while the detective remains in the water and eventually drowns.
The Truth About the Missing Fiancée
Three months later, the private investigator meets his friend and tells him an important truth about his client's fiancée: she was innocent and had never had an affair with anyone.
Her death was different from the murders connected to the detective's obsession with unfaithful women.
The detective had gone to her house because the CCTV footage there had recorded something that could expose him. He asked her for the footage, but she became suspicious and wanted to contact the police station to confirm his identity.
The detective knew that if she called the police and his identity was confirmed, he could be exposed. He therefore killed her to stop her from revealing.
This makes her death especially tragic because she had done nothing wrong. She simply had information that could have exposed the detective.
Why Did the Detective Kill These Women?
The detective's wife was the person he loved deeply, and discovering that she had cheated on him completely broke him. After that, his anger and pain became connected to women who were having affairs with other men.
My interpretation is that whenever he saw another woman betraying her partner, he started seeing his own wife in that situation. His pain gradually turned into an obsession, and that obsession eventually led him to murder.
That's why I don't see him as simply a typical serial killer. He is a deeply broken man whose life fell apart after his wife's betrayal. What he did was obviously wrong, but the movie gives enough of his personal story to understand where his actions came from.
His relationship with his wife also explains why he remains so attached to her even at the end. He had wanted a happy life with her and had even made a house for her. Instead, everything he wanted fell apart.
The final moments also show that there is still some part of the person he once was. Even while both men are drowning, he regains consciousness after memories of his wife come back and chooses to save the private investigator.
Why Is the Ending a Good Ending?
The ending works because the two men eventually go in completely different directions. The detective loses his life after becoming completely consumed by his pain, while the private investigator survives, saves Betty, learns the truth, and gets another chance to repair his own life.
Both men are dealing with problems in their marriages, but their situations are very different. The private investigator has become emotionally distant from his wife and investigator doesn't even want children (because of his financial condition), while his wife is actually loyal to him. She even asks her friend to pretend to be her lover to make her husband jealous and get his attention because he has become so focused on his work.
The detective, meanwhile, cannot recover from his wife's betrayal. His pain takes control of his life and eventually destroys him.
That's what makes the ending feel positive despite everything that happened. Betty survives, the truth about the case comes out, and the private investigator's relationship with his wife finally starts to get sorted out.
The detective's story ends tragically, but his final decision to save the private investigator gives his character one last human moment. He was responsible for terrible things, but in the end, he still chose to save another person's life.
